Inscribed and signed by Osacr Wilde to Catulle Mendes (1841–1909), French poet, critic, and novelist of the Parnassian school who founded the Revue fantaisiste (1861), contributed to the Parnasse contemporain, and wrote volumes of verse, including Philoméla (1863) and La Grive des vignes (1895). L’Evangile de l’enfance (1894). Tipped to the front of the book is a small, short telegram from Marcel Schwob to Catulle Mendes. Marcel Schwob's (1867–1905) work is associated with the decadent and symbolist movements. His volumes of tales include Le Roi au masque d'or/The King with the Golden Mask 1892, Le Livre de Monelle/The Book of Monelle 1894, Vies imaginaires/Imaginary Lives 1896, La Croisade des enfants/The Children's Crusade 1896, and La Lampe de Psyche/Psyche's Lamp 1903. He also wrote essays and various works on the 15th century. Covers sunned to the edges. Light stain to the top edge of the back cover. Title and ornament in silver to the front cover lightly rubbed. Spine edges look to have been professonally repaired. Previous booksellers inscriptions in Japanese to the front endpaper in pencil. Light, small brown spot to the title page, else internally in fine condition. A most excellent association copy in near fine condition.
